As 60 drew closer, I knew I had to make some changes in my own life, but I always prioritized the wrong things.
I eventually turned 60, and I was overweight.
My doctor told me that my heart is suffering and I have to lose weight or things could take a turn for the worse.
Hitting the gym at my age was certainly not something I wanted to do – but I definitely had to take a step and improve my health.

I owe my health today to the changes I made just five years ago. I still remember being overweight – I felt unmotivated all the time. I didn’t feel like I was attractive at all.
I kept telling myself that I had to make a move.
I already knew that obesity causes many health problems – and reaching the age of 60 is no joke. It also holds many hazards – as the body grows older, diseases start to pop up, sometimes unexpectedly.
The problem is, I was not up to buying a gym membership and working out at a gym. I already felt so self-conscious – can you imagine a 60-year old lady working out with a couple of gals in their 20s.
Unfortunately, even though I knew that something had to be done, I kept postponing. I continuously told myself that I would start to become more physically active and I will start to eat healthier.
I kept setting goals, yet never got to the point where I implemented the steps I had to take before I could reach those goals.
After my 60th birthday, I started to experience abnormal heartbeats and occasional chest pains.
It didn’t seem serious at the time, but I raised the topic with my doctor. He did some tests and told me that I would have to try and lose some weight.
He continued to explain that my weight was affected my heart – he also explained that the reduction in weight could help improve my osteoarthritis symptoms.
This led me to search for the best exercise for over 60 and overweight – I discovered a couple of exercises and gave each of them a fair chance.
Only some worked, which is why I want to share with you some of the most effective exercises you can use to help you lose that excess fat and reclaim your health.
Weight Loss Exercises For Over 60
Obesity is linked to hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, breast cancer, and a lot of other complications.
I really wanted to live up to see my grandchildren – so reducing these risks that obesity caused me to suffer was essential for me.
If you feel the same way, then take a look at the exercises I am going to share with you below – I’m sure you’ll find them just as easy and convenient, as well as helpful, as I did.
The key to exercising after 60, especially if you haven’t been particularly active, is to start slow.
Take things one step at a time, and you’ll gradually start to become stronger, more physically fit, and find that increasing the intensity of the exercises become easier.
First up is definitely swimming! Many people do not think of swimming first when it comes to talking about exercising, but I found that this type of exercise provided me with an excellent way to start out.
Swimming is more intense than you might think. Simply do a couple of laps in the pool. Start with around five or 10 minutes each day – then add an additional five minutes per day until you can do at least 30 minutes during a single session.
You can either swim or just walk in the pool. I found that swimming does not only help to reduce my weight but also eased my joint pain.
Jogging is sometimes a little strenuous, especially when you only get started with your exercise regiments. For this reason, I highly recommend you consider some brisk walks.
Don’t walk too slow, though, as this would not give you a significant amount of exercise. Try a fast walk.
Similar to swimming, try to start by walking for around 10 minutes per day, then gradually build up – adding approximately five minutes every day that passes.
Do this until you can continue your brisk walk for 30 minutes. You can even aim for longer periods – perhaps even a full hour (just be sure to take a quick break or two in-between).
Just like swimming, dancing is often seen as a recreational or professional activity, and not particularly as a type of exercise.
The truth, however, is that dancing can be a powerful way to help you lose weight – and this activity has no age limit.
There are hundreds of different dances you can choose from – and the majority of these dances will have benefits to help you get your heart pumping, make you sweat and, ultimately, help you shed some of those unwanted pounds.
I struggle a bit in the beginning as I haven’t spent much time dancing before, but I decided to put effort into this as I always wanted to be able to dance.
I took a few dance classes that were specifically aimed at older people – it was truly fun.
If you want to take up dancing as a physical exercise and you are too afraid you will step on someone’s toes, then you should look up a few dancing studios in your local area.
They are usually very reasonable, and they may also provide special classes for people your age.
Finally, I want to share a tip with you – while all of these exercises are great alone, know that group exercises are much more fun and can be very motivating.
No need to join a gym, though. Simply get a couple of similar-aged friends – talk to them about forming an exercise group.
When you exercise in a group, you can participate in so many “group-based activities.”
Go out and play a game of tennis, for example. Tennis offers you a great workout, and it is perfectly fine to start things out slow – pair up into groups and challenge each other.
Excess weight is harmful to your health – especially when the many diseases that come with age also starts creeping up on you.
Luckily, there is no need to give up hope or even go to the gym. I discovered the best exercise for over 60 and overweight – and you can also benefit from it.
